As many in hip-hop are growing more comfortable to talk about mental illness, Meek Mill is stepping opening up about his own demons.

Mill said that doing his four-month prison sentence, being held in a prison cell for 23 hours a day mentally took a toll on him.

“Next thing you know, my mind frame has to switch from sleeping in my bed to being locked in a concrete metal cell for 23 hours a day for weeks,” says Mill.

Even getting out of prison hasn’t made him 100 percent mentally free. The Philly rapper goes in details on how the probation system is designed to keep you incarcerated.

“It’s a dark shadow over the top of your head on a daily basis. Probation is like, they say, to help rehabilitate you and help you better yourself coming out of prison. In my mind, I never felt like I was fucked up. [It’s a] trap door that’s gonna keep you in and out of the system. You don’t even have to commit a crime to go back to prison.”

So what is Meek Mill’s solutions to this problem? Read more about how he wants to change the justice and prison system on The Jasmine Brand.
