The Frozen Banana Race is a pretty quirky name for a charity event. But as the saying goes, ‘you can’t judge a book by its cover!’

This definitely applies to 16 year-old Ian Montgomery and his Frozen Banana charity race. Ian created the race as a means to give back to his community. He has been highly encouraged to support pediatric cancer after losing both his grandmother and aunt to the deadly disease.

When he was in 7th grade, Ian manifested his idea of a 2 mile race to benefit a charity and cause he believed in and that would have a meaningful impact.

Ian has always been a hockey fanatic and a big fan of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Upon learning more about different causes the Blue Jackets support, it was clear what he should do.

“I’m a huge Blue Jackets fan,” said Montgomery. “I just found out about the Blue Jackets Foundation and their pediatric cancer program and after that, I just knew I want to give back to them.”

The first Frozen Banana Race took place in 2015. Since then, Ian’s charity race has grown from the initial 20 people in participation to 120 people! He has managed to raise more than $12,000. The money raised from the annual event goes directly to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation and helps to fund trips for pediatric cancer heroes. This hockey season, Ian’s cause was able sponsor a young man named Tyler, who was able to attend a Blue Jackets road game in New York City and attend a Broadway show.

Director of the Columbus Blue Jacket Foundation, Darla Owens said “…we wouldn’t be able to do those kinds of experiences without races and fundraisers and fans like Ian, who really just can make those authentic moments possible because of their genuine passion for our community!”

Ian Montgomery is definitely an inspiring individual and has begun a selfless journey at such a young age. He says, “…being able to give back to the foundation and seeing everyone’s reaction and positive impact that brings and the positive effects it brings the community, it’s meaningful.”

The 5th annual Frozen Banana race is set for this Sunday, March 10th at 11 a.m. It will be held at the Dublin Community Recreation Center.
