What happens now to women’s reproductive rights in Ohio?
It is now law in the state of Ohio that a woman can not have an abortion if a heartbeat is detected from the unborn child. Doctors say a fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as five weeks into pregnancy before many women know they are pregnant.
None of that matter to Republicans and Governor Mike DeWine as they made the controversial Heartbeat Abortion Ban law on Thursday. Joining five other states that have passed similar bills.
Even before the governor’s signature that ACLU reported they will file a constitutional challenge to the law. They along with ProLife groups say it is a step to try to overturn U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion up until viability, usually at 22 to 24 weeks.
This law also makes no exceptions for pregnancy resulting in rape or incest.
