“Industry rule number four-thousand and eighty / Record company people are shady”

– Q-Tip “Check The Rhime”, 1991

When Prince launched his war against Warner Bros. Records in 1994, the general public thought he had gone mad.  And maybe His Royal Badness had lost it a little bit, since he started scrawling the word “Slave” on the side of his face.

But 16 years later, people are starting to see that Prince Rogers Nelson was not only ahead of his time when it comes to music, but also when it comes to the business of music.

Rapper Lupe Fiasco has been battling his record label, Atlantic, which just so happens to be owned by Warner Bros., over the constant delaying of his third album, Lasers, for the last couple of years now.

Lupe recently delivered the keynote speech at The Second Regional Academic and Cultural Collaborative in Dayton, OH.  During his speech, Lupe talked candidly about the 360 deal his record label tried to push on him, and the fall out that happened once he refused the deal.

Lupe’s fans have been organizing an October 15th protest outside of the label’s office. Lupe hinted on Twitter recently that he may join his fans there.

Personally, we think there are dozens of other things much more worthy of a protest than a new Lupe Fiasco album, but more power to Lupe for fighting for his art.
