This Can’t Be Life…Well Not Mine Anyways.

While channel surfing between laundry loads on Sunday night, I stumbled upon a group of well-dressed black women on the TV screen. This immediately piqued my interest; so, I stalled a bit to see what program it was. The first thing I noticed was the mediocre cinematography; so, I knew it was one of those reality shows, but I lingered anyway, hoping that my staunch anti-reality music channel  show attitude might be proven wrong — not so much.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that, against my better judgment, I had ventured into the world of “Basketball Wives.”  A show that, on principle, I am dead set against. Let me preface this by saying that prior to Sunday, I had never actually seen the show for myself; but, working in a salon, I had heard plenty. My first issue with the show is that, much like the “Real Housewives of enter city here,” most of the cast members aren’t actually married. If they are going to have a lifestyle show, the cast members could at the very least be leading that lifestyle.   So I guess “reality” tv has to make allowances for these types of things, and I digress on that point. My second issue with these types of shows is that marrying into wealth shouldn’t necessarily earn a person the right to fame — have they not had enough good fortune? I am no a hater; not by any means. But, I do think that those time slots could go to programs that feature people that have actual talent, who study and work at their craft, who possess a stage presence and some poise. These reality shows are killing actors’ careers, much like internet downloads are killing the music industry. I would much rather spend those 30 minutes taking in a sitcom, crime drama, or even a variety show; but, to peer into the lives of those who stumbled onto wealth doesn’t interest me much. For me, it would be different if they were pioneers of something. I enjoy watching “Run’s House,” because this is a portrayal of the real family of a man who paved the way for a whole generation, and a generation beyond that.  Something like that makes sense to me. But the I-landed-me-a-baller shows are not my speed at all. Last night’s episode showed an attractive and wealthy black woman, drunken and belligerent, remove her shoes and attempt to start a fist fight at a charity event. I’ll pass. This brings me to my last and final gripe… image. READ MORE
