Pop legend, Michael Jackson passed away 3 years ago on June 25, 2009. In the years following his tragic death, many question whether it is appropriate to celebrate on the anniversary of his passing each year. So many of his devoted fans feel compelled to honor his musical contributions. For instance, a Facebook group entitled: “One Million Michael Jackson Fans Pledged to Light a Candle On June 25, 2010” currently contains 14,580 members.
Each year on the anniversary of MJ’s death, there are nationwide honorary celebrations to honor him. This year, The Jackson Family Foundation plans to hold a red-carpet event called “Forever Michael” on June 25th, which will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and will consist on tributary performances.
However, the question still remains whether we should be celebrating his life on the anniversary of his death. Because Michael’s life, as well as his death, was filled with controversy and scandal, some may have a clouded view of his legacy and find him unworthy of celebration. Michael’s mother, Katherine, in fact, believed that people wanted Michael dead, while his father, Joe, puts blame on Michael’s doctor, Conrad Murray, and accuses him of causing a “wrongful death.” With all the scandal and mystery surrounding Michael’s death, we wonder whether a celebration is even in order.
