A teenager was killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking home from a funeral Thursday night, according to the NYPD.

NBC New York reports Ovidio Jaramillo, 17, was at a crosswalk at around 11 p.m. in Queens when he was hit by a black Toyota Camry. The car quickly took off after hitting the teenager.

Jaramillo was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said. The Northern and Junction boulevards in Jackson Heights, Queens, have seen a total of nine car-related accidents this year. Jaramillo is the first fatality.

Last week, the City Council tallied a staggering total of 38,000 hit-and-run crashes reported in New York in 2015. Close to 4,000 have resulted in personal injury or death, and 34,000 were dents and sideswipe crashes.

New fines were introduced for what councilmembers called “heinous” acts. Fines upwards of $1,000 will be issued to those who damage private property, $2,000 to $5,000 if anyone is injured, and $10,000 if the hit-and-run results in death.

So far, police have no leads in Jaramillo’s hit-and-run case.
