New York Police Department officers on Thursday arrested a 24-year-old man in the shooting death of Carey Gabay, aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Gabay was fatally shot Sept. 7, 2015, just hours before Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade was set to begin.

Micah Alleyne, the alleged gunman, was charged with murder and reckless endangerment, a law enforcement official confirmed. He also faces weapon charges.

Gabay, a Harvard graduate and lawyer who served as the first deputy counsel at the Empire State Development Corporation, was walking with his brother near the parade route when he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs. The 43-year-old, who was struck in the head, was rushed to a nearby hospital.

He died nine days later.

More than eight months after Gabay’s death, it’s unclear what led police to Alleyne.

According to Pix11 News:

In the months since Gabay’s death, police have released photos of individuals wanted for questioning and a reward for information leading to an arrest has grown to $22,500, but no arrests have been made until now. It was not immediately known whether a tip led to Alleyne’s arrest.

In March, investigators asked for the public’s help to identify three men and a woman possibly connected to the shooting.

This is a developing story.
