New Orleans bred artist, Mannie Fresh, is one of the most influential producers and DJs in Hip-Hop. We had the honor of Mannie Fresh joining us right here on POWER during The Kickback with DJ Nailz and DJ Mr. King for a full length, exclusive conversation. Mannie talks about staying grounded in the industry, loving Columbus & Orange Soda Fest, and his passion for music. About Mannie Fresh
There would be no Southern Hip-Hop style without Mannie Fresh. 54-year-old Byron Thomas AKA Mannie Fresh is known for being the main production force behind the Cash Money Records dynasty and pioneering “bling-rap”. You know… that heavy, brassy sound with a good snare.
Mannie Fresh has been shaping the music industry since the ’80s. The producer started as a DJ in local New Orleans clubs and joining hip-hop crews just as bounce music was emerging. He became Cash Money Records’ in-house producer in 1991, earning credits on almost all label releases from 1998 to 2004. During that time, he racked up 17 RIAA-certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum songs and 19 Billboard Hot 100 entries, including his debut single “Real Big” in 2004.
As one-half of the Big Tymers with Cash Money co-founder Bryan “Baby” Williams, Mannie earned Grammy nominations and produced more than a dozen platinum and gold-selling albums for Juvenile, B.G., Turk, Lil Wayne, and Big Tymers.
Yet, Mannie’s impact spans beyond his Hot Boys & Cash Money success. He’s produced for countless New Orleans artists like UNLV, Magnolia Shorty, and Pimp Daddy. Furthermore, Fresh has lent his game to other artists outside of Louisiana like T.I., Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Jeezy, T-Pain, and 2 Chainz.
Today, Fresh continues to make timeless beats and tours with Juvenile and others giving our aunties and uncles concerts straight out of ’98.
