No Shave November is in full effect. It’s the one time of year that any and all men are encouraged to grow their beards. During the beginning stages, you may realize you’re actually unsure how to style those facial follicles, or which look really fits your lifestyle (or face) the most. But have no fear, put down that razor and keep reading.

Here are the best beard styles for men – not only in Movember, but all year-long.

Full Beard

For most baby-faced dudes, the first week or two of No Shave November is less than ideal. But once week three rolls around, your beard starts to show some signs of ruggedness and your peach fuzz turns into real scruff. You’ll realize you’re a “beard guy” when December comes and you still haven’t pulled out the razor – you’d rather see how it goes. A full beard can even be acceptable in the workplace, just make sure to trim unruly hairs and shape up your neckline and cheeks to keep things looking neat. With the help of a little beard balm, you’re set for winter.

The Dark Caesar

Though originally named after Julius Caesar’s simple haircut, the Caesar has now become a modernized cut that doesn’t require much care. After a few days of not shaving, you start to like the shape of your beard. By the end of the month, you might realize that a full beard is too much of a drastic change and opt to shave most of it off, but leave enough to avoid looking like your high school graduation picture. This looks best on guys who can actually grow a full beard with no bald spots. With a quick edge up and some beard oil, it’ll look painted on. Just look at Joe Budden.

Tapered Beard

This one is for the dudes with short, stubby faces, or those who suffer from no chin syndrome. About a month into beard growth, you’ll start to see pronounced hair actually sticking off your chin. At this point, you decide that it’s gone too far, or in the opposite vein, the look is for you. Tapering your cheeks and letting the hair along your jaw line flourish will create a streamlined look and goes great with a pompadour or fade.

Mustache

This one’s usually reserved for the hipster crowd, or Steve Harvey. After deciding to fall into society’s November norm of growing out one’s facial hair, your inner hipster is just waiting to come out. As you stand in front of the mirror to shave on December 1, you realize the pornstache just might be the look for you. Your friends may clown you at first, and a few girls may call you a creep, but who really cares? Remember: any man who shaves his beard for a woman deserves neither. If you’d really like to up the ante, get some mustache wax and go full-on handlebar. In the end you might look like Tom Selleck, and that should be a win in everyone’s book.

5 O’Clock Shadow

We get it – all that hair on your face isn’t for you, but some scruff is the perfect medium so people can be aware that you are an adult and not a preteen. Please be aware that a 5 O’Clock Shadow that’s actually noticeable isn’t just a result of your hair’s growth since your morning shave; it actually takes a few days to get that “I just rolled outta bed but I still look good” look.

We’ve all been shaving once and decided to leave the hair around our mouths to see how it looks. Maybe that’s what happened to Kanye West during one of his mirror staring sessions (he probably has those). Or you’ve just watched one too many Leonardo DiCaprio movies and would like to live vicariously through him. Or you’re a fan of Bow Wow. No judgment here.

Chin Strap

Oh, the chin strap. Everyone had the chin strap circa early ’00s. And if you’re from New York, it was usually paired with a few eyebrow slits. But for some dudes, all they can grow is the hair on the outliers of their face and this is their only hope at participating in No Shave November. And for other dudes, it actually just works.

We get it, it’s not for you. But the day after you shave and that winter wind whips you in the face, you’ll be sorry you ever chickened out. Pro tip: Whenever you feel like shaving, give it a few more days and see if you still feel the same. Then again, that’s great advice for not giving up on anything in life.
